Founded in 1881 by Kintaro Hattori at the age of just 21, he opened a shop selling and repairing clocks and watches in Tokyo. More than 130 years on, Seiko is one of the most famous brands in the watch industry with iconic movements created by Seiko and designs that stand the test of time. With Seiko in Japanese meaning “exquisite”, “minute” or “success” and “Sha” meaning house, the original Seikosha Company began creating wall clocks in 1892. Three years later in 1895, it was followed by its first pocket watch. By 1913 Seiko had produced its very first wristwatch called the Laurel, it wasn’t only Seiko’s first wristwatch, and it was Japan’s first wristwatch.

Throughout their time, Seiko have created many different style watches that have got them to where they are today. In the 1960’s Seiko announced itself as a competitor in the sport timing stage, being endorsed by many sport federations and leading sporting events.

In 1969 the Seiko Speedtimer was born with the innovative Calibre 6139. So innovative, this timepiece was the world’s very first automatic chronograph with a “magic lever” and also with a vertical clutch and a column wheel. This technology showed a huge improvement to measuring elapsed time in a wristwatch.

With two different options in the latest selection of the Seiko Speedtimer collection, either mechanical or solar chronographs, the mechanical chronograph is powered with the Caliber 8R46 which Seiko’s most advanced automatic chronograph movement. The solar chronograph is powered by their Caliber V192 which features a 60-minute chronograph, 24 hour sub dial and a power reserve indicator.

With the entire Speedtimer collection featuring sleek classic designs continuing from the original model produced back in 1964, the Seiko Speedtimer chronograph keeps a subtle nod to the original in many ways. The bracelet strap on this watch can we replaced with a black leather strap to match that of the original model.
